BEHIND THE PUZL
Remember that handheld puzzle game from the ’90s — Lights Out by Tiger? Those soft, squishy buttons you couldn’t stop pressing. The hypnotic flashing red lights. The classic beeps and boops that felt futuristic at the time. I spent hours glued to it, chasing that sweet pre-smartphone dopamine rush. (Yeah, I’m dating myself.) I got so hooked, I actually devised an algorithm to beat every single level. 14-year-old me was pretty proud. Little did I know, that same obsession would plant the seed for what would later become PUZL Boy.
Fast forward to 2022. After being laid off, a spark hit me: a puzzle game where each level had to be solved within a limited number of moves. But a purely mathematical challenge felt… flat. How could I make it exciting, alive? The answer was obstacles — different terrain, special items, unique challenges. Drawing inspiration from the games of my youth — like Zelda II: The Adventure of Link on the NES, where a boulder blocks your path until you find the hammer, or Final Fantasy VII on PlayStation with its slippery ice puzzles — I began adding my own twists. Boulders that must be smashed, dragons that guard your way, icy tiles that send you sliding, and poisonous marshes that cost double moves. Suddenly, PUZL Boy had life.
At first, the game was pure mechanics: colors, shapes, logic. A directional pad (D-pad) to move your guy — an orange, uninspired circle. No cool sound effects, no fun animations. Just puzzles. Once the foundation was laid, I added sprites, sound, and music, then began playtesting. One of my earliest testers? My 7-year-old niece.
She jumped right in, tapping the panels to move. Hmm, I thought — replace the D-pad with tap controls… genius! Then she asked, “Uncle Eddie, what’s the story behind the game?” I didn’t have one. “Can I be in it? I want to be a princess!” You got it, Princess Olivia. You don’t say no to a 7-year-old.
And just like that, the story of PUZL Boy came to life. Designing hundreds of puzzles was the easy part; weaving a heartfelt, magical narrative around them was the real challenge. I wanted to make games, not write fiction, but that story is what gives the game its soul.
Three years later, it’s finally ready. I poured everything I had into this project, and I hope you enjoy PUZL Boy as much as I enjoyed creating it. If you do, please rate and review it on the App Store — and tell your friends! It would make me (and Princess Olivia) very happy.
